Shuman Produce is committed to the fight against breast cancer. That’s why we donated $20,000 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation this past October.
Each year, during the month of October, look for RealSweet sweet onions in the produce section of your local grocery store in the signature pink ribbon colors that serve to remind everyone of the cause. Together, we can stop breast cancer.
Here are some tips from the American Cancer Society’s recommended diet for cancer prevention and overall health
- Choose foods and drinks in amounts that help you maintain a healthy weight.*
- Get at least five servings of vegetables and fruits each day. More is even better.
- Choose whole grains foods.
- Limit your intake of processed meats and red meats.
- If you drink alcohol, limit intake to less than one alcoholic drink a day for women and fewer than two for men.*
*Maintaining a healthy weight and limiting alcohol can help lower your risk of breast cancer. Other factors are good for your overall health and may help lower the risk of other types of cancer.
There is no sure way to prevent breast cancer. Some healthy lifestyle choices though, may help lower your risk of breast cancer as well as your risk of heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer and osteoporosis. To lead to a healthy lifestyle and possibly reduce your risk of breast cancer, everyone should try to:
- Be physically active.
- Maintain a healthy weight.
- If you drink, limit alcohol (to less than one drink a day for women and fewer than two drinks a day for men). Those who drink alcohol should try to get enough folic acid, either through a multivitamin or foods like oranges, orange juice, green leafy vegetables and fortified breakfast cereals.
- If possible, choose to breastfeed children.
Making healthy lifestyle choices has benefits at any age. Being more active, eating a balanced diet and becoming more aware of your health can be physically and mentally rewarding at any point in life.
As part of our healthy lifestyle message of our BSA recommendations, we recommend all women make healthy lifestyle choices that may reduce their risk of breast cancer, such as:
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Add exercise into your routine
- Limit alcohol intake
