  • Sweet onions are naturally free of fat and cholesterol and low in sodium.
  • Onions are an excellent source of antioxidants and vitamin C. Both nutrients keep us healthy and protect our bodies form disease.
  • Following the Weight Watchers program? Onions, like most fruits and vegetables, count for 0 points. Feel free to add the sweet, savory flavor to your sandwiches and salads without worry of added points!
  • Onions contain a plant nutrient called quercitin, which may help fight a variety of cancers and contribute to bone health.
  • Recent research has shown that those who consume eight or more servings of vegetables a day are 22 percent less likely to die of heart disease. Add a sliced or chopped onion to your next meal and reap the benefits.

Sweet Onion Storage Tips

  • The best way to preserve sweet onions and to prevent bruising is to store them in a cool, dry place and separated from each other.
  • Always handle sweet onions carefully. Because they have a higher sugar and water content, they bruise easily.
  • Wrap sweet onions separately in paper towels or newspaper and store in the refrigerator.
  • Store sweet onions in the legs of clean, sheer pantyhose by tying a knot between each onion and hanging the hose in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. Cut above the knot to use an onion.
  • Place sweet onions on elevated racks or screens in a cool place… make sure they’re not touching.
  • Chop sweet onions and dry them in the oven at the lowest setting. Remove when thoroughly dry but not brown. Store at room temperature in airtight containers.
  • To freeze sweet onions, chop and place on a cookie sheet in the freezer. Once frozen, place the chopped onions in freezer containers or bags.
  • To freeze whole sweet onions, peel, wash and core them, then place them in a freezer bag. Since freezing changes the onion’s texture, frozen Vidalias should only be used for cooking.
