Every Vidalia sweet onion is delightfully sweet, but not every sweet onion is a Vidalia sweet onion. The Vidalia onion is so special; the Georgia legislature declared it Georgia’s Official State Vegetable in 1990. Here are some Who, What, When, Where, and Whys to help you distinguish this superb onion from all others.
The overwhelming majority of Vidalia onion growers are multi-generational, family owned-and-operated businesses.
A Fresh Vidalia Onion has a light golden-brown bulb and a white interior. Its shape is rounded on the bottom and somewhat flat on the top or stem end.
Vidalia onions are harvested from mid-April through mid-June and are usually available in grocery stores throughout the summer months. This is made possible by storing our Vidalia onions in Controlled Atmosphere Storage (CA) facilities located throughout the growing region.
Vidalia onions can ONLY be grown in the 20-county production region located in southeast Georgia. This area’s unique combination of sandy loam soils and mild climate results in the Vidalia’s one-of-a-kind sweet mild flavor.
They contain the highest sugar content and the lowest pungency levels of any sweet onion grown anywhere in the world.
Since Vidalia Onions have a distinctly different flavor that’s milder and sweeter than any other onion, they are great in salads and sandwiches where hot onions would be overpowering. Use thick slices on hamburgers or with grilled steak. They are also delicious by themselves, raw or baked.
You can freeze Vidalia onions to use year-round. To satisfy your year-round craving for fresh quality sweet onions, Shuman Produce imports sweet onions during the winter months from multiple growing regions in Peru, Chile, Central America, and Mexico.
The result is RealSweet®, a nationally preferred brand that includes a wide variety of Vidalia® onions, sweet onions, Georgia red onions and Organic sweet onions.
